TOWN OF LITCHFIELDRehabilitation of the Woodruff Street Bridge over Tannery BrookThe bridge carrying Woodruff Street over Tannery Brook is estimated to have been constructed in mid 1970's and is comprised of a steel superstructure supported on concrete abutments. The steel superstructure has deteriorated to a point where the bridge has been closed to traffic and rehabilitation is warranted, while the existing substructures appear satisfactory for reuse. The rehabilitation project will include the complete replacement of the existing bridge superstructure, with minor modifications to the substructures to accommodate the new superstructure. The completed project will also provide bridge railings conforming to current design standards and a widened bridge width to improve the turning radius onto Russell Street. Anchor Engineering Services, Inc. has been selected by the Town to design the rehabilitation and prepare construction documents for this project. The anticipated project schedule is as follows:
Current Status Due to advanced corrosion of the steel beams and the corrugated steel decking that make up the bridge superstructure, the Woodruff Street Bridge has been closed to traffic. Traffic is currently detoured through local streets. The design work for the rehabilitation project has been completed. Work completed to date includes topographic and planimetric survey of the surrounding area, field delineation of inland wetlands, as well as preliminary and final design. The construction project was advertised for bidding on April 6, 2010 and a bid opening was held on April 20, 2010. A contract for the bridge rehabilitation was awarded on May 13, 2010 to Nagy Brothers Construction of Monroe, CT. The design for the rehabilitation includes the complete replacement of the existing bridge superstructure, with minor modifications to the substructures to accommodate the new superstructure. The new superstructure has been designed in conformance with the current edition of the AASHTO Standard Specifications for Highway Bridges. The completed project will provide a roadway width to match the east approach, and improve the turning radius onto Russell Street. During construction, the bridge will remain closed to traffic with a detour plan in place. The plan will allow for the continued use of Russell Street to through traffic, with short term temporary closures of one lane of Russell Street as required for construction activities. Construction is anticipated to begin on June 14, 2010 and be completed by August 14, 2010. Periodic updates and progress photos will be provided on this site. |
